Procedure Overview/Details
For additional information:
Radiology Info website

Your physician has requested that you undergo a nuclear gastric emptying study. This is a simple and non-invasive way to evaluate the emptying of ingested food from your stomach to your intestines.

When you arrive in the department, the technologist will make a scrambled egg that has a small amount of radioactive tracer in it. You will not be able to smell or taste the tracer in the egg.

You will be given the egg along with a slice of bread and a glass of milk or water. It is important that you eat as much of this as possible, as it is to simulate a normal meal.

Immediately after eating you will be asked to lay on a table while a camera takes a one minute picture. These pictures are then repeated every 30 minutes for 2 hours.

The study will take at least 2 1/2 hours.
Preparation
You must have nothing to eat or drink after midnight the evening before your procedure.

Check with your physician (one who ordered this test) to see which medications should be withheld and for how long before this study. Many medications can affect gastric emptying, and knowing which medications to withhold is very important.

After Procedure Instructions
There are no special instructions to follow after your exam.
